2 months notice...

Mark it down... February 3rd, 2006 was the day I gave notice to Dofasco about my trip to South Korea.

My last day will be March 29th, 2006, which gives them 2 months to shift resources to cover my responsibilities in Process Automation; Finishing Mill and Coiling temperature control systems. Thus ends, perhaps temporarily, a really enjoyable 5 1/2 years of work as a Senior Automation Analyst at Dofasco. I really can't say enough about the company... They have treated me well, enabled me to have a full life outside of work as well as given me interesting and stimuating work to do.

I have to say, giving your resignation notice to a company that you really respect and leaving a group (Process Automation) filled with as many professional and fun people to work with is a really tough thing to do... I was pretty nervous for the couple of days leading up to my resignation, but was rather pleased with the response from my manager.

As for the details...
On April 17th, my girlfriend Steph and I are heading off to Mokpo, South Korea , to teach English to youngins (Gr 1-2) in the public school system there. The trip was set up through Canadian Connections, an ESL placement service, who place you in a city, find you a school to teach and pay for flight and residence once you arrive. The contract we have signed is for a year, and will give us plenty of time to travel and absorb the culture... as well as give us some time to explore some of our interests and perhaps some correspondence learning (if you ain't learning, you'z getting dumber!).

Backlash
Already I'm getting some flack from people at work and earlier, some from friends about abandoning my career, or carrying out an enormous CLM (Career Limiting Move). I'm not worried. Plowing up the corporate ladder does not interest me... I've always believed that you should try as many different things as possible to add to your toolbox of skills, experience as much as you can, to differentiate you from the others... as well as keep you excited about work and life. One of my profs in University said that we would have 8 different jobs and 3 completely different careers...

You just need to embrace change, rather than fearing it.
Learn to use it to your advantage, and remember that wherever you go, you will always land on your feet.

Here goes nothing!!!
